Anhydrous Hydrogen Fluoride (AHF)

Anhydrous hydrogen fluoride is a colorless toxic gas (under standard environment conditions) with a sharp odor, at room temperature exists predominantly in the form of H2F2 dimer, below temperature of 19.9 ° C degrees it is a colorless mobile volatile liquid. It is miscible with water in any proportion with the formation of hydrofluoric acid. It forms with water an azeotropic mixture with a concentration of 35.4% HF. Anhydrous hydrogen fluoride is produced from natural raw materials - fluorspar. Hydrogen fluoride is widely used in various industries.

• It is used for production of cryolite, fluoride derivatives of uranium, freons, fluoroorganic substances, matt etching of silicate glass (hydrofluoric acid - for transparent etching).
• The unusual solubility of biological molecules in liquid hydrogen fluoride without decomposition (for example, proteins) is used in biochemistry.
• The addition of fluorine acceptors to liquid hydrogen fluoride allows the creation of super-acidic environment.
